About this painting . . .
Fishermen on an island just off Vietnam's coast make basket boats from strips of bamboo, with pitch and tar providing the waterproofing. The little boats are used to shuttle people and supplies between fishing boats and shore. People often live on the fishing boats and many boats had shapes on the bow representing eyes, symbolizing the role of boat and fisherman in the search for fish and other useable life under the water. I thought of the basketboats and eye-painted fishing boats as Vietnamese Vintage.
